Food safety training games to play with your team
Looking for a fun food safety activity that still teaches something real? Here are ways to run Food Safety Legends, and why gamified learning works.
Why food safety games work
Food safety training games turn refresher sessions, inductions and toolbox talks into something your team actually looks forward to, without losing the substance of formal training.
Gamification adds play, competition and reward to learning. For food safety, that matters because games let people practise decisions in a risk-free environment, remember more of what they covered, and actually want to take part. Played in teams, they also build the communication and shared accountability that a strong food safety culture depends on.
6 ways to play with your food safety team
The full board game
Run Food Safety Legends as designed, teams race around a food production facility, drawing Pitfall, Power-Up and Action cards and answering quiz rounds. Best for a proper 45–60 minute training session.
Knock-out quiz tournament
Head-to-head food safety quiz rounds. Losers drop out each round until one Food Safety Champion is crowned. Great for Quality Week or a shift competition.
Department challenge
Production vs. warehouse vs. dispatch vs. cleaning. Each team plays a round; highest combined score wins. Builds cross-departmental relationships.
Pitfall & Power-Up match-up
Lay out the Pitfall cards and have players race to place the correct Power-Up (corrective action) on each. Fast, and it drills the response, not just the hazard.
Spot the allergen relay
Use the "Spot the allergen" and "Odd one out" quiz cards as a timed relay between teams. Good for allergen-awareness month.
Toolbox-talk starter
Draw three Pitfall cards at shift start and discuss: has this happened here? What would we do? A 10-minute engagement booster with no board needed.
Great for
- World Food Safety Day (7 June)
- World Quality Week
- Food Safety & Quality Month
- New-hire induction days
- Monthly refresher sessions
- Pre-audit team preparation
